Dr. Elçin Sebahat KASAPOĞLU, a faculty member of the Elderly Care Program at Bartın University’s Vocational School of Health Services, provided training on “Working with Older Adults with Alzheimer’s Disease, Dementia and Delirium” for the staff of the 75th Year Nursing Home, affiliated with the Bartın Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services.

The training was organized as part of the Bartın Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services’ 2026 In-Service Training Plan and was held at the 75th Year Nursing Home on September 28, 2026, following a request submitted by the Provincial Directorate to the University Rectorate.

Based on current literature and international guidelines, the training covered Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, the stages of the disease and their implications for care, as well as the early recognition of delirium—which is common in nursing homes but often overlooked—and simple screening methods. The training also addressed effective communication with individuals living with dementia, non-pharmacological approaches to behavioral problems, creating a safe care environment, key considerations regarding nutrition and mealtimes, collaboration with families, and protecting caregivers’ own health. These topics were reinforced through practical examples and case discussions.

The training emphasized that, as Turkey’s older population continues to grow and dementia and delirium become increasingly common in long-term care settings, the observations of care staff play a critical role in helping older adults access early diagnosis and treatment.

At the end of the training, participants’ questions were answered.
